In Washington state, the struggle with unauthorized mining

Utilities Chelan County (Washington, USA) were forced to disconnect supply of electricity to three sites for the extraction of cryptocurrency: in an apartment in Wenatchee, in the house in Malaga and the mini store in Selene.

These sites used the power, which did not comply with fire safety regulations and pose a threat to network equipment that is not designed for such loads. Only service identified 28 sites of illegal mining, activities of nine of them in March were discontinued.

In particular, in one of the empty apartments, the employees of municipal services, examining the counters, said manifold increase of energy consumption, which instead of the usual 500 kWh reached 11,000 kV*h. Windows and balcony doors were wide open for removing heat generated by mining equipment.

Utilities (PUD) intends to seriously deal with such violations, are at risk of others, and the perpetrators of such violations will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

One of the ways of combating unregistered mining facilities located in the premises, PUD Commissioner Steve McKenna (Steve McKenna) sees the installation in the building automation meters of power consumption. Identified with their help, the illegal miners will be subjected to fines and forced network outage.

April 16 meeting of the Council will consider the introduction of penalties for unauthorized mining. For illegal mining in residential areas, the amount of the penalty shall be $ 5,000, and in commercial areas from 7,000 to 10,000 dollars.
