March 12 was officially started mining bitcoin in the new company Marathon Patent Group located in the canadian province of Quebec. According to reports NASDAQ, 8 February, Marathon announced the acquisition of 1,400 miners Bitmain Antminer S9, and a week later the company leased premises with an area of over 2,000 square meters in Quebec with the aim of establishing it data center.
Monday Marathon officially announced the successful installation of the equipment and early mining operations which, as noted
NASDAQ, «involve the consumption of about 2 MW and the achievement of power hashing at approximately 19 peachesa». Merrick Okamoto (Okamoto Merrick), acting President of the Marathon and Chairman of the Board of Directors, said:
«Today’s announcement is an important milestone for the company. I would like to thank everyone who helped make this day happen for our shareholders.»
Marathon also plans to significantly expand its operations on the mining of cryptocurrencies and add additional capacity of 3.9 MW to provide enough energy to power even to 2 800 Antminer S9. Marathon interested in this new activity after acquisition of GBV, which mainly focuses on the mining of cryptocurrencies.
The canadian power company Hydro-Quebec, the main supplier of electricity in the region, are unable to meet the demands of the miners, but before that it actively invited a large company to take advantage of cheap renewable electricity in the region. It seems that the Marathon had to negotiate with Hydro-Quebec before the demand for cheap electricity has exceeded supply.
