One of the world’s largest aluminum producers, RUSAL (trade code on the Hong Kong stock exchange 486, Euronext RUSAL/RUAL, Moscow exchange RUAL), announced the beginning of the design of the data processing center (DPC) in the territory of Nadvoitsy aluminium smelter (Naz) in the Republic of Karelia.
The data center will be focused on providing high-tech IT services, including special services for the analysis of big data, machine learning, mining of cryptocurrencies.
The first partner data center in Nadvoitsy will be mining startup AA!LAB with RUSAL signed a Memorandum on cooperation in the field of digital technologies. First data center will include at least 5 thousand computing units, servers, and workstations. The electrical power consumption of equipment will be about 6 MW. The timing of the implementation of the joint with AA!LAB project – the third quarter of 2018.
Available renewable energy from the Ondskaya HPP, part of the HPP will ensure the effective operation of the data center, and cold climate of the region will reduce the power consumption of the equipment cooling systems. Competitive advantages of the project are: developed engineering infrastructure of the plant and tax credits (settlement of Nadvoitsy was included in the state program on creation of territories of rapid socio-economic development). To develop a platform open to all stakeholders.
«Now the RUSAL company determines the list of potential partners and clients of the data center to design the optimal capacity of its first phase. For server and network equipment the company is ready to convert several buildings at the plant. Also on the site are reserved about 5 hectares for the development of the center,» said RUSAL’s Director for new projects Alexey Arnautov. He also noted that only the first stage of the data center will create at least 20 high-tech jobs.
The power supply system of the Nadvoitsky aluminum plant and the proximity of the Ondskaya HPP, part of GES (included into JSC «EvroSibEnergo») will provide the centre with a high level of fault tolerance in accordance with the international standard Tier 3.
Hydroelectric power plant with an installed capacity of 80 MW is the top level and head-end of the Vyg HPPs Cascade. Average annual generation of HPP Ondskaya HPP, part is 416 million kWh.
Startup AA!LAB was founded in 2017 in Bulgaria Russian programmer Alexey Zenkov. The company implements international Mining project Now, which needs to be created industrial facilities for the generation of cryptocurrencies in Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
